Part OnePersephone was a good goddess. All her life, Persephone had been very good, indeed. So, you can imagine Persephone’s indignation when she was taken away from her home and forcibly kidnapped. As far as she was concerned, Persephone didn’t deserve such treatment.
After she was kidnapped, she was forced to stay in the Underworld with Hades of all Gods. Persephone’s anger was barely contained, but her fear of being in an unfamiliar environment was greater than her rage. The thought of being trapped in the same space as the God of Creation and Destruction made Persephone feel chilled to the bone. Still, Persephone wasn’t afraid of him. Although she was a little goddess, Persephone wasn’t one to be underestimated. In fact, she was quite the enterprising businesswoman. Before her kidnapping, Persephone had made a name for herself on Mount Olympus selling her handmade potions and draughts, scented with hydrangeas, roses, and sage. She even had dreams of opening her own apothecary one day. The words Persephone’s Perfunctory Potions etched in spunky, glittery writing, materialized in the air as if to mirror her thoughts. An unwelcome voice interrupted her daydreams. “Uh Persephone, you in there?” asked Hades. His voice sounded muffled through the ebony door. Her mood darkened immediately. Thunderclouds appeared above her head, and she snapped at the clouds, putting a stop to the rain that would have poured out from under them. A dewy, black-colored rose emerged from behind her left ear. “Yes sir,” said Persephone, who wasn’t sure how to address one’s kidnapper, but supposed that if one wanted to stay alive, then one should appease him. She glanced at her worried reflection, as if asking a close friend what she should do. To be continued…

a haikuMother Gaia speaks
Through blossoming of flowers Waking near spring leaves. Is there something you’ve been wanting to do? What are you waiting for?
No really, what’s stopping you from going toward your desire? Lack of Experience? Not enough time? Sometimes, these reasons can be valid, but… a lot of the time, they’re just excuses. If there’s something you’ve been wanting to do, this is your sign to go for it. It doesn’t matter how many days, weeks, months, years, or decades have passed by. Yes, I said decades. It’s never too late You may think it’s too late, but that’s not true. It’s better to start now than to never at all. I joined Medium on a whim. If I hadn’t joined, then I would still be stuck in the same place in terms of my writing journey. If you do the thing… You never know what will happen if you just start doing the thing you want to be doing. It seems simple, yet many people struggle with taking the first step. You can think of starting a project or whatever you want to do like planting a seed. If you plant the seed, you’re giving it a chance to grow. If you don’t do the thing… If you just think about planting the seed but never do it, then you guessed it: nothing will happen. Time doesn’t wait for any person, not me or you. Time will creep up on you, and then one day, you’ll realize you still haven’t accomplished or even attempted to do the things you wanted to do the most. If you don’t do the thing, no one else will do it for you. Not your family, friends, partner, or anyone else. No one’s going to save you from yourself. The question remains: what are you waiting for? Die with zero regrets No one wants to die with regrets, so go do the thing you’ve been wanting to do but haven’t done yet. Whether it’s starting a new business venture, moving, taking a vacation, writing a book, catching up with someone, making amends, forming new relationships, learning a new skill, ending toxic relationships, creating a healthier lifestyle for yourself, asking for a raise, starting a new hobby, or anything else your heart or bank account desires (joking about the bank account but not really ;). Do not be reckless. Also, this goes without saying, but don’t make a risky decision without a practical plan. Make sure you have enough resources to do what you’ve been wanting to do. Do not abandon your current responsibilities to pursue what you’ve been wanting to do. I repeat: do not just abandon every single thing you find mundane or boring. The mundane and boring are part of the process. The goal is not for you to lose your okay/good reality for nothing at all if you get the gist of what I'm saying. The goal is to get to your dream reality, which is very possible! To get to your dream reality, keep paying attention to your current responsibilities, but start to take those first steps toward your ideal life and reality. Integrate your dreams with your reality, until your dreams become your reality. “There is always a desire for more in the ever-changing world. More money. More happiness. More power. More knowledge. More validation. More admiration. This desire is a kind of insatiable hunger that humans feel. The solution to wanting more is to be grateful for what you have. Not complacent, but grateful. Hunger isn’t necessarily a bad thing. It can serve as the fuel that drives us to go after our goals, wishes, and biggest desires. But too much hunger leads to greed.” — Yao Liu
Fear of Success
Does fear block you from pursuing the things you want? When pursuing success, you may tell yourself things like I’ll fail anyways so why bother trying? or I’m just an ordinary person, why should I be able to achieve that? then something like If they can do it, why can’t I? Why is this? Well, we’re wired to seek comfort. The path to success can be very uncomfortable and uncertain (especially when you’re just starting). Discomfort and uncertainty are obvious triggers for fear. Don’t feel bad if you find yourself being afraid of success. It’s only to be expected since the fear of success is related to our primal fear of rejection. Growth Mindest A week ago, I finished a book called Mindest: The New Psychology of Success by Carol Dweck. You’ve probably heard of this book as it’s fairly well-known, but if you haven’t read this book yet, I highly recommend reading it. This book discusses the differences between a growth and a fixed mindset. While a growth mindset is focused on expanding oneself and embracing failure as a challenge to grow, a fixed mindset is based on believing you don’t need to change and that you can’t even if you want to. A fixed mindset is centered around believing one’s talents, skills, and intelligence are fixed and unchangeable. A fixed mindset correlates to a fear of success (and failure as well as rejection). If you have a fear of success, my biggest piece of advice is to switch your fixed mindset to a growth one. I think you’ll find a simple mindset shift to be life-changing. Concluding Thoughts Did you take anything away from this essay? Is fear preventing you from reaching your biggest dreams? Whatever your relationship with fear is, I hope this essay encouraged you to break free from your comfort zone and live more fearlessly. Being human is a strange experience. It’s both liberating and terrifying that we all must face death. In my opinion, it is more terrifying than liberating though. On a daily basis, I worry about so many small things that do not make any difference in the long run. I feel that the human experience is both wondrous and saddening. |
